Train from Trivandrum to Varkala

The train journey from Bangalore to Trivandrum was to be our first of many overnight train journeys so we were quite excited to see how we would fair. Once we battled through the chaos of the Indian ticket office where the art of standing in queues has not yet been adopted we easily boarded the train.
The berths would have been fine for the average person however at 6ft5 I just didn't fit no matter how hard I tried! not making for a great nights sleep. But when we could watch sunrise over the beauitful countryside it all seemed worthwhile.

We arrived in Trivandrum briefly (15min) and caught another train to Varkala and then another tuk-tuk which are now becoming an invaluable means of transport and getting less scary! Varkala is a cliff top coastal resort and a very welcome change from the honking horns and chaos of Bangalore.
Finding accomodation was easy and had great sea views and most importantly had a proper shower and not the usual bucket and tap.

Varkala seemed to be a very popular place for yoga and recki which helped to lead to the chilled out and relaxed atmosphere. The view from cliff top restaurants of the sun setting and the fishermans lights coming on and glistening in the moonlight was very relaxing. It seemed the fishermen came out in the evening and returned in the morning, no easy feat considering the boats were not much bigger than a wooden canoe.

I think we are both settling into a routine now and moving from place to place is becoming less challenging although we have come to the conclusion that we seem to be carrying more than any other travellers we have come across!

Gem's posting coming soon!
